Australia's general insurance industry has reported a 19% return on equity (ROE) for the financial year 2025, marking the highest level in a decade.
This significant achievement is detailed in the latest Optima Report by actuarial consultancy Finity, which attributes the strong performance to a combination of favorable factors.

The sector benefited from a period of benign weather, resulting in fewer catastrophic claims. Additionally, strong investment gains and the continued flow-through of premium increases contributed to the robust financial results. These elements combined to create an environment conducive to enhanced profitability for insurers.

Pravesh Ponna, principal at Finity and lead author of the report, noted that while the sector's results are impressive, they occur alongside increasing financial stress in the broader economy. Businesses are cutting back, households are feeling the pinch, and economic confidence is fading. This context underscores the resilience of the insurance industry amid external pressures.

The Optima Report provides an independent assessment of the general insurance market, drawing on economic trends and sector analysis. It highlights that the industry's ability to achieve such a high ROE reflects effective risk management and strategic pricing decisions by insurers.

Looking forward, the report suggests that while the current favorable conditions have bolstered profitability, insurers should remain vigilant. Macroeconomic and risk trends, including potential increases in claim frequency due to climate change and economic volatility, could impact future performance. Therefore, ongoing investment in risk assessment and mitigation strategies will be crucial for sustaining profitability in the evolving landscape.
